Booklist - Top 10: Oddities

The 10 creatures profiled in this installment of the Wild Wicked Wonderful series might not be the oddest, but they’ll certainly satisfy students eager to learn about exotic animals. Proboscis monkeys, flying fish, scorpions, and anglerfish are among the creatures featured, and each section offers plenty of easy-to-read facts. Interspersed are accounts of very weirdly behaved organisms, such as the man with pica who ate an entire plane and the unidentified beast ex-sanguinating animals in North Carolina, that may make readers wonder why those oddities didn’t make the cut. Still, the high-resolution photos and very simple, almost jarringly direct sentences (“It tore their bodies. It drained the blood from their dead bodies.”) will make this go down easy for struggling readers. An inviting introduction to the world of weird critters.
