Japanese Internment Camps

The historical fiction novel Red Berries, White Clouds, Blue Sky tells the story of Tomi, a young Japanese American girl and her family from leaving their strawberry farm in California and moving to Tallgrass, a Japanese internment camp, during World War II. The nonfiction book, The Japanese Internment Camps, shares three perspectives of life in the Manzanar War Relocation Center during the same time period. The activities included with this bundle focus on studying the novel by keeping a reading response journal with prompt choices and checkpoint questions for daily reading and writing, examining a photograph for clues to the past, researching and comparing perspectives on life in a camp, comparing fiction and nonfiction texts, and planning and writing a story from the point of view of someone who lived at the time. Opportunities are provided for students to generate questions, reflect on their learning, and share what they have learned. Great for media specialists and teachers looking for standards-based activities to aid in the support of remote learning or for parents wanting to help or enhance their child's education with content-rich books and activities!
