Booklist - Nuclear Explosion Hacks

Cover: Nuclear Explosion Hacks

There’s no question that the Could You Survive? series (8 titles) will grab kids’ attention, but will they learn the skills to weather its disaster scenarios? Definitely not. However, each scenario is simply the hook to get kids interested in basic, themed STEM projects and related facts. This volume uses the fictional premise of a nuclear explosion to introduce concepts of nuclear reactions, fallout, and radioactivity. Each of the five chapters contains a survival “hack” (project) paired with a STEM-related explanation for how the hack works, and some chapters also feature a biography or “real-life connection” related to nuclear science. Readers learn how to build a cob shelter, water and air filters, a washing machine, and a candle, and nuclear trivia concludes. A fun way to spark interest in STEM.
