Booklist - Kumusta, Philippines (Countries of the World)

Cover: Kumusta, Philippines

Readers embark on an educational survey of the Philippines with this matter-of-fact book from the Countries of the World series (8 titles). The first chapter provides an overview of the archipelago’s tropical climate and varied geography and wildlife, as well as its mixture of uninhabited islands and densely populated cities. The country’s main industries, agriculture and machinery production (helpfully depicted in a bar graph), share a chapter with its political history; the complexities of colonialism, though, are not addressed. The final three chapters introduce the Philippines’ people, popular sports, celebrations, and food—including a dessert recipe for maja blanca, a sweet corn pudding. While the text is of limited depth, it does offer a fairly comprehensive first look at the country. Photos and scattered activities enhance this report-ready resource.
